You have to have a magnetized pot (check with a kitchen magnet), and flat bottomed pot, as 5 of my 6 stainless steel pots were not magnetic, so didn't work, even though they were stainless steel nice pots. **Q: Would this unit work for home brewing a 5 gallon batch?** A: It probably would.
