Review: Beast of an SSD if you don't need PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 - Why I ordered this item: I'm trying to breathe new life into an old computer that only has PCIe 3.0 and I needed a new drive. This was pretty much the top tier drive in its day, so I felt confident it would be a good option for me to use in this rebuilt gaming PC for my kid. Likes: * Install of NVMe drives is super easy. Plug it in, screw it in (don't lose the screw!) and install your OS. Connectivity is easy, and this will work on boards with newer PCIe versions too. * My computer detected it with no issues at all. I was able to install Windows easily. * It doesn't run anywhere near as hot as new drives, so no heatsink needed! It gets a little warm during operation, but I monitor my drives with software and it's not anywhere close to this drive's max temp. * Power consumption is almost neglible! * Speeds are excellent. Samsung truly was a leader with this drive and it still almost totally maxes out NVMe 3.0. * This is not super important, but it looks totally awesome. The label is so classy. No likes: * None Would I pay full price for this product: Yes, even at these inflated prices. Final thoughts: Maybe someday SSDs won't cost 4x what they did a year ago, but I'm still very happy with this drive and I can whole heartedly recommend it if you don't need PCIe 4 or 5.

Here's my experience: Performance: Even though it's DRAMless, Samsung's HMB (Host Memory Buffer) technology makes it feel incredibly fast. Boot times are nearly instant, and large file transfers are Consistent. @+1 Sequential Speeds: I clocked it close to the advertised 3,100 MB/s read and 2,600 MB/s write on CrystalDiskMark. It handles multitasking and gaming load times with ease. Thermals: The nickel coating on the controller and the heat spreader label actually work. Even under heavy load, it stayed remarkably cool, which is crucial for maintaining longevity in compact builds. Software: The Samsung Magician software is the best in the business. It makes cloning your old drive, monitoring health, and updating firmware a breeze. Verdict: f you are upgrading from a SATA SSD or an older HDD, the difference is night and day. It's a reliable, high-performance drive from a brand you can trust. Excellent value for mid-range builds.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What's the difference between this 980 1tb ssd and the 970 evo 1tb?**
A: tl;dr - the 980 runs cooler, since it's not got that DRAM cache, and it will write 20GB a whopping .6 seconds slower than the 970 EVO Plus and 1.3 seconds faster than the 970 EVO. 980 is hands-down the SSD to pick. Details to follow if you're interested:

tl;you're STILL going to read? OK, here ya go:

Here's a rundown on how you would perceive the speed difference between the 970 EVO and the 980. At these verified _maximum_ transfer rates - if you are writing a 20 GB file okay? WRITING a 20GB file (assuming the source drive is not a bottleneck, i.e. is equivalent for both), the _theoretical_ elapsed time for the different SSDs is:

The 980 will write that 20GB in ~6.7 seconds (at 3000 MB/s)
The 970 EVO Plus will write that 20GB in ~6.1 seconds (at 3300 MB/s)
The 970 EVO will write that 20GB in ~8 seconds (at 2500 MB/s)

Which is to say that the differences would normally not be perceived. When considering that the 980, without the DRAM, is generating less heat - which matters - I would definitely go with the 980 for better heat management and a $20 savings over the 970 EVO Plus (2021-05-16 prices). You're only losing .6 seconds for those frequent huge file writes, heh.

20 GB is easily 3 to 5 full-length videos, in HD, or more - in under 7 seconds! Crazy.

Yep, go with the 980 with lower heat and wave goodbye to the .6 seconds... Ehh, probably not enough time to wave - wink goodbye. ;-)

As far as downloads - I cannot conceive of a situation where these SSDs will have ANY effect upon the speed. Period. Even on a super-fast broadband connection, the network is going to be the bottleneck. We are not quite getting multiple GB/s on typical broadband service. Typically, even a SATA drive at 550 MB/s will surpass most broadband download speeds, substantially even - most of the time.

My .02 and change.

Yeah - the cooler-running 980 would be my pick. The 980 wasn't available when I got the 970 EVO at $135, and the Plus was $170 back then. At that time, I reasoned that the fully ONE WHOLE SECOND SLOWER for that 20GB file was something I could probably live with. Samsung is doing really well - consistently at the top.

Sorry so verbose.

**Q: What is the difference between 970 evo plus vs 980 ssd?**
A: From what I have read, 970 has built in cache and 980 doesn't. However, 980 being newer has other features. In real everyday performance, I cannot see a difference. I have 2 computers with same motherboard chipset and processors. One boots to a 970 the other to a 980. Equal performance in my opinion. I would get whichever is the best price. Hope this helps.

**Q: I have older asrock z370 pro4 motherboard, it says it supports ultra m2 ssd, but not sure if nvme is supported? do nvme drives need different m2 slot?**
A: According to the specs on your motherboard:
2 x Ultra M.2 Sockets (M2_1 and M2_2), supports M Key type 2230/2242/2260/2280 M.2 SATA3 6.0 Gb/s module and M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen3 x4 (32 Gb/s) *Supports NVMe SSD as boot disks

This is key type 2280 so it will work for you

**Q: Is the ssd compatible with amd ryzen ™ 7 3750h (um700 minisforum)?**
A: you need to check with your laptop official website

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Crazy Fast and Excellent Value for Money
*by W***W on April 27, 2021*

Been using Samsung products ever since I swapped to SSDs. They are the best and provide reliable performance. I concurrently own the 850 EVO, 960 Pro, 960 EVO, 970 EVO Plus, 980 Pro and now the 980 all at 1 TB storage capacities. Each of them have been blazing fast, significantly faster than standard SATA SSD's. Clearly the 980 is an excellent NVMe drive. I cloned this ssd just using it for a backup drive. Currently I use 980 Pro. Actually I really cannot tell the difference between these two on a PCIE 3.0 motherboard. With a Asus ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming PCIE 3.0 motherboard, this SSD is stupid fast. Very happy with the performance. I agreed with the argument that NVMe PCI Express Gen 4 drives would likely not really make a huge difference over a fast the PCIe Gen3 SSD drives. I know PCIe Gen5 SSD is not far behind. Also the drives obviously cost more. When connected through the M.2 to USB NVMe SSD Adapter, it could not be initialized. When I tried to initialize hard drive via Disk Management and receive error message such as “This request cannot be completed because of an I/O device error” or “The device is not ready”. The is something wrong with the hard drive connection cable or adapter. M.2 NVMe Interface Internal SSD drive is easily initialized in m.2 slot on motherboard. This also needs to be installed in the M.2 slot closest to the CPU which has a direct connection to the CPU. Using EaseUS Software, I imaged my existing 980 Pro 3-partition hard drive onto this SSD and it booted perfect and have not had a single problem. Windows 10 Asus ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming Motherboard Intel Core i5-9600K 4 X Crucial BLS8G4D32AESBK.M8FE 8 GB DDR4-3200 DDR4 SDRAM NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 (6 GB) Samsung Magician: Samsung SSD 980 1TB Sequential (MB/s) Read 10268 Write 10341 Random (IOPS) Read 465576 Write 283935 This is a very high quality product and you won't be disappointed in the performance.
