Are they magnetic?** A: They appear to be solid stainless steel and are so described in the product description. I have used them a good number of times in the past month and clean them with a wire brush. There is no sign of pealing as there was with the grate supplied when the grill was purchased. I believe they are not magnetic. I touched them with a refrigerator magnet and it did not stick. **Q: Do you need to clean before first installing grate on grill ?** A: I would clean them to get any preservatives off the cast-iron before putting food on it.
