Sadly all of the comments were duds. As far as cooking hot dogs, if you stick 4 or 5 of them in your car's muffler pipe and run the engine, you will cook them to a nice warm temperature and if done right the exhaust pressure will shoot them out when done, so no need for a timer. **Q: Will it stay on until turned off?** A: I've seen both answers here, with about 85% of "no auto-shutoff" prevailing. So let me tell you my ACTUAL experience. My Sunbeam King Size heating pad came with a tag on it that says 732-5 (no ending 00!). The instruction book says "FOR MODELS WITH AUTO OFF FEATURE: The Auto-Off feature is indicated by a LED light in the upper left corner of the controller." It does not says WHICH models have the BLASTED auto-off feature. My heart sunk when I saw an led light in the upper left corner of the controller. However, I can say this: IT DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF! I use it every night on the lowest setting, and I love it. No blasted shut off every so often.Since other folks (maybe 15%) have said that it does shut off, let me express some possibilities:1. They have a different model than the 732-500, OR2. They have said model, but some of them (perhaps without the 732-5 sic tag on them) do have auto shut-off, OR3. The folks that say this are confusing "cycling" with "auto shut-off". Sometimes a pad has to TEMPORARILY cut off the juice to keep the temperature stable -- just like an electric range does. But that is NOT the same as Auto (Blasted) Shut-Off. If the pad is cycling, it will continue to heat again in a minute or two. Mine does not seem to even have to cycle. However, again, cycling is not auto-shut off. Units that auto shut-off usually have the light blink, or have some other indication that they timed out. The simplest test is to feel it! If it has auto shut-off, it'll go toward room temperature.Again, if it is merely cycling (for those few pads that need that feature), it will not stay off and heading toward room temperature.This is the word of a purchaser who has owned and used the 732-500 for over a week now, NOT someone who is guessing, nor visiting web sites, nor misreading a manual. My 732-500 does NOT automatically shut off. Thank God! **Q: Does it have an auto-shutoff? (I don't want it to shut off automatically)** A: Check the box for the model number...it SHOULD be 731-500 (this item). I have checked it and it does NOT have auto shutoff. The instructions are confusing and misleading on this. It does have power light but this is NOT an auto shutoff light!!!! I think most of the confusion over this question is because purchasers are not checking the actual model number and perhaps were shipped the wrong one!!! **Q: Can we lie flat on our backs on this product, or does the manufacturer say not to? We don't want to have to lie on our stomachs.** A: As far as I know all heating pads tell you not to lie on them. I haven't let that stop me with any I have ever owned. Just pay attention to the heat setting and how long you lay on it.
