I'm an old gardener with old-fashioned methods and I was frankly suspicious when this item arrived. I have always been used to growing cacti and succulents in, basically, a pot of sand and grit. This mix does contain sand and grit as well as loam and peat (not derived from threatened areas). It is light and loamy in appearance. I soon discovered that you need to water from the top, or if you prefer to soak them be sure to water the top first and don't fill the sink higher than the top of the pot - otherwise, at least at first, the whole lot floats away. In spite of my original concerns, my cacti and succulent collection has been transformed - healthy, sustainable growth and in many cases, flowers have been the result. The mixture does not develop mould or attract pests. I'm using it for plants with a fleshy leaf such as Mother-in-Law's tongue and Winter cactus as well as true succulents.
