Is it resistant to solvent?** A: Regarding the solvent "resistance" of the high-density polyethylene used for the exterior of the Kane heat mats, it really depends on the temperature of the mat's plastic cover, the solvent(s), and the duration of the "exposure" to the solvent. There are PLENTY of 'charts' of the solvent resistance of various materials on the 'net. It appears that it is pretty dang durable! Suggest that you use a search 'program' for your particular application. **Q: Is the thermostat waterproof?** A: It is water resistant, but not waterproof. It will keep out water to an extent, but should not be left out in the rain or submersed in water. The simpler mats have just a variable power controller which is a seperate item, so you'd need "hands-on" experience on how high to set the mat temperature depending on the ambient temperature, where the dog's bed is located, and if the mat is covered and with what since Kane doesn't make covers for ALL of their mats. IF the bed area is _sheltered_ from wind & breezes you should check into their thermostatically controlled mats which will hold the mat at an adjustable, temperature that you select. More expensive, but pets are people too!!! Regarding the useage of any type of cover on the top of the mat, I've been using Kane mats with the simple control for my feline family that sleep on the patio on "their" heat mats during the so. Calif. "winters" and have the mats covered with old towels to give them comfort, and never had a problem in the 30+ years I've been using Kane mats. I keep the temperature lower than if they were not covered, BUT I am _NOT_ saying that my method will work in all cases and situations.I _personally_ think that Kane's thermostatically controlled-temperature mats should lessen or eliminate what possible overheating problem(s) that might develop when using a non-Kane's cover on the mat as the temperature controlled mats have a built-in thermal sensor that the remote thermostatic control uses to regulate the mat's temperature, as well as an over-temperature "switch" in the mat to prevent the mat from overheating. Any responsibility is YOURS and YOURS alone! I've found that Kane mats are FAR more durable than the pet store "made in the Orient" garbage so you really get your money's worth with them.
