However, a white container kept out of sunlight on a dark cupboard will do the same. You have to be patient as it takes about a week to 10 days to kill both larvae and eggs in the soil. Also once you’ve done this get some horticultural grit from the garden centre and cover the surface of the soil in the plant pot. This stops the adult gnats being able to land and burrow down to lay more eggs. To catch the flying adult gnats put apple cider vinegar in a saucer, add a teaspoon of sugar and a squirt of washing up liquid (yellow if possible - they think it’s a flower decaying!) then put it next to the houseplant. I use it in the washing machine, and it definitely helps remove stains from white sheets, though it’s not quite as powerful as I hoped. I made the mistake of using it on natural linen curtains, which caused some bleaching, that's my own fault. I would recommend it mainly for white fabrics. It’s not a miracle solution, but it helps keep whites bright and prevents them from turning grey. I keep a tub of it because I use it regularly.
