It kills me to pay up for Scotts! But it kills me worse to use a no name brand and watch the lawn struggle. If I had to guess, the difference is the 'carrier material' that Scotts uses, onto which they apply the fertilizing chemicals. Most fertilizers are a hard crystalline base material that seems to dissolve extremely slowly. While Scotts is a more 'clay-like' material that dissolves rather fast, getting the fertilizer to the plants faster. It's most evident when the fertilizer lands on a side walk, after a rain the Scotts will be dissolved into a big circle, while the crystalline fertilizer pellet will still be setting there. The only drawback is if you leave an opened bag of Scotts exposed to humid air, the fertilizer will absorb moisture and it WILL CLUMP UP and WILL CLOG YOUR SPREADER! Rendering it virtually useless.
