It is meant to be washed out with each shampooing. It is a very very fine powder that clings to your own hair strands and settle onto your scalp to make hair seem less thin. After styling my hair I spray lightly with hairspray then dust the top of my hair with it. I find this works best for me. **Q: What colors are available?** A: I got the gray and it works well with my gray/white hair. **Q: How do you use this with the spray applicator?** A: You would take the lid off the canister and screw it into the spray applicator. **Q: Is it a colored powder or does it have a literal texture to it?** A: It is a colored powder. It comes with a shaker top but you can also purchase an atomizer. It looks like a rubber ball with a long tube attached to it. You squeeze down on the rubber ball and it puffs through the tube. I personally think you use less if you purchase that extra piece. And then once you have that you can use it on future containers. But that blending power of this product is very impressive. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Review *by M***A on 26 November 2014* I have one word for those who have equivocal results (given their degree of hair loss) - experiment! There are many shades of this keratin product, and mixing to match is often necessary. I have salt and pepper hair, heavier on the gray, lighter on the brown. I mix the gray product with light or medium brown (depending on what I have) at a ratio of roughly 5:1. It also will require experimentation to find the right amount to use. I put it on still damp towel-dried hair, holding the shaker about 6-8" above the head; then I gently and briefly tap/rub my fingers across the area of the head in an attempt to "stabilize" or "set" the fibers; they don't do a lot of good sitting on the scalp, but rather when positioned between individual hair shafts. Therefore, if TOO much is applied in a given area, it may appear more like a scalp dye or cosmetic cover-up. With my degree of hair loss, a gentle dusting is all that's required. Others may require much more. I must say I've never had a problem with any running, staining, appearance on skin or clothing, pillowcases, or what have you. That is based on personal experience with the amount that is required for my needs. It really does work and does what it is supposed to do. However, one must use it in a way that optimizes the result and that requires some getting used to (a week or so?) I'm an MD specializing in hair transplant surgery (HTS); I see many men and women who use this and/or Toppik (I personally find them interchangeable), and I recommend it frequently. Unfortunately, here is a point of hair loss at which it's not much of an option anymore. Realistic expectations are required. Thinning is simply the penetration of light onto the scalp; several factors enter into the "coverage" equation: density, or the number of follicles per unit area (cm2 or sq inches), caliber of hair (shaft diameter), curl or lack thereof, etc. Two-tone hair is also generally a plus (some light is reflected, some absorbed, thereby "fooling" the eye). High contrast between hair color and skin color is typically a negative as well (eg, I am Caucasian, and if I were to dye my hair dark brown or black, my thinning would be MUCH more evident! High skin/hair contrast) My comment above regarding realistic expectations is assuming that one has gone through the "break-in period" and figured out a technique, AND that the degree of hair loss is not too great. There MUST be enough hair there for a bit of "cross-linking" to take place, i.e., for the fibers to "connect" hairs to one another and give greater blockage of light. Imagine a thatched roof over a hut; the denser the thatch (corresponding to hair density), the larger and more robust the thatch itself (corresponding to hair shaft caliber/diameter), and the more "crossed" or interlinked the individual thatching is (corresponding to keratin fibers), the more light will be blocked and the less light will penetrate to the floor of the hut (corresponding to the scalp). These fibers, as I understand them, are barbed, that is, they are similar to fir tree or pine trees branches, with multiple short needles projecting off of the main stem (or somewhat similar to a bird's feathers). As such, they have some capacity to "interlink" with hair shafts and with one another. Denser thatch (back to that analogy) and more blockage of light. In this way, the APPEARANCE of thinning is diminished. If in fact there are too few hairs in an area, or if those hairs are too severely miniaturized (decreased in diameter), this will not work well or at all.
