I bought books as a class set for my 5th graders. However, we will skip around due to one story talking about sex and another. Not graphic, just a line or two of one story of how the girl felt like "she had to" She felt guilty, etc. but that's one part we will skip. I pair it up with Number the Stars, so we read the WHOLE fiction book, but we still read "Hidden" because we are able to bypass something that may be inappropriate, but at the same time, the stories are important. Maybe more middle school than fifth grade to read alone. Overall, my students loved it. Again, we didn't read the whole thing, but we did read the majority of this book, particularly children their age and younger. Its in separate chapters for each child. At the end of the book it has pictures of the children today. It has great text features, pictures, captions, bolded words, footnotes, etc. Students enjoyed reading this paired up with Number the Stars. Review: Good read - Book delivered in perfect condition and I enjoyed the short stories in them. A small sneak into their lives and how brave these people were to endure such tragedies. I enjoyed the photos that came before every story too. I learned a great deal more than I expected to and when I was done with it, I passed it on to my 9 year old who likes history. My only warning is this. If you do not want to have a conversation about sex, it might be better to wait to read this book.
