Cut a branch off a tree, stick it through the hole at the top, and start drilling. I used my wife's broom handle, for mine, and she hasn't found out about it, yet! If the wood is dry, this thing cuts through like butter. Wet wood, not so much, but still acceptable for an old guy like me, with arthritis. In some applications, I could see a longer auger being more diverse, but this works for everything I need it to do.
