They are water resistant. If you are walking in the rain they will likely be just fine. However, the seams are not sealed and they are not waterproof. Just discovered that today when I was sitting during some rain and discovered to my disappointment that my pants were soaked because the seams in the crotch allowed plenty of water to come in. **Q: Are this good for hiking around 5-10 miles.** A: they are paper thin , comfortable.I use them on the boat, not sure about hiking, as long as the area was not thicket-like they would probably do well.
