Simple fiberglass weave on top, backed by a vinyl mat with edge trim. The fiberglass threads will not scorch like wool, and the material will resist wearing out from foot traffic as you walk by. The texture of the weave is not harsh on bare feet, nor are there any frayed threads.A wool-weave fireplace rug weighs more and more easily stays put. With the slightest knock this one will slide on the hardwood floor in front of the hearth, so you have to make sure it's up against the bricks on the floor to guard against the stray flying ember and sparks.
