(we used a potted tree and replanted; we are Jewish but wanted to do a Christmas one year for fun) We cut a branch and let dry for a week or so then tossed it in the fireplace- it took a LONG time to do more than mildly smolder, and it had even gotten rained on a bit when we let it dry... outdoors... in Oregon. I can't speak for the fabric version but just ordered some for porch furniture that people smoke on because the regular one is really impressive on the places I've used it, including an outdoor wooden porch bench (again, in a super wet climate!)
