A bad E-capacitor have larger ESR and create large ripple rather than filtering noise. Normally, a big capacitor is larger than 3 ohm. Therefore, we can measure the capacitor is bad, damaged or in good condition by using this theory. Because our ESR meter only applies less than 15mV DC or peak to peak on a good capacitor, as a result we can use it as in circuit test. On a scope, with the meter open circuit, the test waveform is a rounded square wave. When connected to a 100 ohm resistor, the waveform is more of a triangle wave. When connected to a capacitor, it is somewhere between a triangle and a sine wave. **Q: can this meter perform a leak test on motor start capacitors?** A: No. This meter is for one test only - ESR of a capacitor. The only situation I would advise users of is not to relay only on the auto-ranging capability of the meter. Auto-range works great but for some capacitors the ESR is close to the limit of two ranges and the meter will jump back and forth trying to resolve the resistance. If this occurs simply press the mode range button once or twice until the reading stabilizes.
