Good so far with some reservations

*by D***N on Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2018*

I bought this camera for use in our barn to watch our animals at night--the barn has a separate router (on a different subnet) than the one in our home, so getting all the connections correct took a few days. Here are some tips I learned along the way:(1) The "green indicator light" that they mention in the instructions is actually next to the SD card slot under the panel you have to screw off to see. I plugged the camera in and looked all over for this light and wondered if it was actually one of the lights in the front of the camera itself (one of them is tinted green), but finally figured out to remove that panel (I have no intention of adding an SD card so I didn't even think to remove that panel).(2) I tried first to connect to the camera from my phone using the wireless method (which is how I will use the camera), but this failed for an unknown reason. I then used the ethernet connection which did work and removed the cable and now can see the camera from my phone using the wireless network in the barn.(3) It is important to give the camera a static IP address if you wish to connect to it through the web. The camera has 2 MAC addresses (one wireless and one wired) and therefore you'll want to set up a static IP using whichever method you will use going forward (wired or wireless).(4) I got the Chrome Web View app working pretty quickly, but I have a feeling that will only work if my laptop is on the same network as the camera as I'm putting in the local IP address of camera in the address bar.(5) The hardest thing to accomplish is to set up some other way to connect to the camera over the web. The web view app is an NPAPI plug-in (lots of chatter over this on the Amcrest technical forums, most of it very negative), which no modern browser supports, other than IE. I have a Mac, so that wasn't an option for me--I tried Safari, but that stopped support in its recent 12.0 release, and Firefox ESR removed support as of release 52 (it's on 60 now). My final solution was to use a browser called Seamonkey, which still retains NPAPI support. (Pale Moon seems to be another that might work.)(6) If you have 2 linked routers like I do, for port forwarding, you need to set up 2 virtual servers, one on your main (home) router to the static IP of the second router (using the HTTP port you set up when configuring the camera, 37779 is what they use in the example) and a second on the linked router (in our barn) that connects to the static IP address of the camera (wired or wireless depending on your application). My main question was whether to use the local address of the second router in my main router's virtual server table or its address on the second subnet network; it ends up you use the local address. (My main (home) router is on the 192.168.1 subnet and the barn is 192.168.0. The entry in the main router's virtual server table for the second router is in the same 192.168.1 subnet. No need to change subnet masks, they can remain 255.255.255.0 on both routers.)Hope that helps, I'm happy to reply to comments/questions if others have any similar installation issues.

    Good camera, real review

*by M***N on Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2016*

A real review, not paid for like many others, god I hate those. What good is a review if you are being compensated for it. I am now blacklisting any products that pay for reviews, would have avoided this one if I didn't already know this was a good camera.Any camera is only going to be good for you if it meets your particular needs. I wont go into details of this camera as there are plenty of reviews of AMCREST cameras which are all very similar. I will just note some pros/cons I saw for this camera to meet my particular needs.Price point $89, pretty good for 720 with 92 degree FOV, and sd card slot. I have a pretty tight budget for this project so this represents good value for me, 92 FOV means less cameras to cover certain areas, sd card means recording functionality without expense of DVR or cloud services (or in my case limited megabytes on the veriizon MiFi hooked up to this camera. This kind of wide angle causes a lot of fisheye distortion as is expected, but this in mostly inconsequential when using the camera for security purposes. The picture quality is pretty good in line with this price point. The biggest issue for me right now is the push notifications. This camera is being used for security at a vacation home without broadband service. I use Verizon MiFi with very limited data. So I envisioned just using email notifications with snapshots that don't use much data, and for a real security breach, some live video plus the sd card recording (assuming the thief didn't steal it). This plan is not working. The camera motion detection has a lot of mistriggers and the push notification is very primitive. You basically can choose a "blackout" duration for avoiding spamming. This is simply not workable. Furthermore, there appears to be a bug with the blackout period. If I select the maximum value of 3600 seconds, I should get 60 minutes between notifications, instead I get 6 minutes (off by a factor of 10). I cannot get push notifications to work acceptably with this camera because of its tendency to mistrigger and the primitive email notification so I turned this feature off. I have a DLINK camera that lets you select up to 6 snapshots in any interval you want. This is a little better (but that camera also has issues with mistrigger , it triggers everytime it auto switches day/night mode so I get 2 notifications every single day just from this, god engineers are stupid, couldn't just turnoff motion sensing while auto switching modes). No camera is perfect, and to date I have not been able to get push notifications working like I would like with any camera. Best I've been able to do is like 6 emails on a good day. This can get very annoying very quickly, but honestly, I don't think there is any way to use push notifications without some level of spamming (just that this camera is particularly bad in this respect). I tried to play with the motion "sensitivity" and "threshold" settings but for the limited time I tried, did not see any improvement, and don't really care to play with theses settings for days for no improvement. All in all, I think this is a good camera, its just that sometimes your application has very specific needs, and if the camera addresses those particular needs poorly, then all the other great features become moot.

    Didn’t work for me

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2017*

I received this camera today and am extremely disappointed. I don’t know if I got a used or refurbished model but I could not get the green light to come on to begin set-up. It’s a shame because this was a trial purchase to see how the camera worked with blue iris security software and to test its overall functionality before upgrading the rest of my cameras. This camera had great reviews and I read that it did in fact with blue iris but, as already stated, I couldn’t get past the first step of plugging the camera in and powering it up. I checked that the power strip was working and then spent 20 minutes online trying to find an actual manual to see if the camera could be reset as the unit only ships with a quick start guide . I finally found the manual at Amcrest.com but it was of little help - no info on what to do to get the main green LED to turn on. My other cameras have an easily accessible reset button but this one is somewhat hidden. You access it by removing the two screws where the SD card goes. The 15 second reset did not resolve the problem - I kept getting a blinking red and green light near the reset button and the green LED under the lens on the front of the camera never came on. I considered getting a replacement camera but I’m honestly too annoyed at wasting an hour trying to get this one to even turn on.To be fair, the camera seems sturdy and well built so I might have gotten a dud. The iPhone app seems like it makes set up and management easy. If you get a unit that will allow set up it might work for you but I’m not going to chance it myself.
