When open water swimming it is nice to know I can rest on it if needed. Gives me the extra bit of insurance I need to feel safe. It is also great for holding my keys and glasses while I swim! I fit some sandals, my keys, my cell phone, and wallet in the dry bag side, fold it up to seal it and then inflate the air bag part (it has two compartments). You can put a backpacker style towel in it (thin but highly absorbent), but not your sunbathing beach towel. As with any "dry bag," they can leak a little, so I always put my cell phone and keys in a second waterproof bag, although I haven't had problems with it leaking (don't overfill it or you won't be able to roll the top properly & it won't seal properly). I would not recommend going smaller than the large size, even for small people. One of my 5' friends uses the large size and has no problems. I don't notice the buoy floating behind me. Boaters and people from the shore have told me they could see me from a very long distance away. Since we don't want to leave anything valuable on the shore or in the car, being able to take it with us is perfect. I like to rest by draping my arms over it. The bag floats right behind my buttocks in the little eddy and surprisingly, it does not interfere with my kicking. If there is a strong wind, it can go a little to the side, but it is still not a problem. The waist strap is also comfortable.
