WIsh I had bought it sooner
I've watched this for a long time - sorry I didn't buy it sooner.Great for reheating leftovers for a family.Don't have to wait for the serial process of heating up plates in the microwave, one after one, and can cook an extra side dish on top while u r reheating your leftovers.Ex. Put your leftover meat/casserole in one pan, leftover mashed potatoes or co pasta in another, then maybe some frozen peas in the 3rd (skip the water). When ready line up your hot pans on the counter and plate the food. No burning of food occurs as it cuts off automatically with the timer. In the time it took to heat/cook, the table is set and no burners/pots to monitor. Efficiently used only one "burner" for 3 foods.Or put fresh vegs or raw rice on first, than add a pan or 2 of leftovers to reheat towards the end. Previously, I was bothered about the healthy water I was throwing out after steaming broccoli for ex. Nutrients/minerals lost. And the plastic model steamers - like steaming chemicals into your dinner.!The 'around the side' steam design functions perfectly. The pans and rings wash well in the dishwasher. It was shipped with a white plastic something or other in the bottom section.Dont know what it is for but I dont use it as I dont want plastic with my food and it works fine with out it. It looks useless anyway.Only reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5, is that the metal is a little thin.Heat conduction is not needed, just the steam heat does all tke cooking, and the steam circulates well - so the thinness in not a functional issue at all and surely not a reason to pass on the purchase as it performs fabulous for the price.

Unit has problems that become evident with use
We ordered this steamer for several reasons. The first being that our Oster bit the dust after several years of use. I use my steamer 4 to 5 times a week. We had other steamers that had plastic breakage problems over the years - only to discover that replacing broken parts cost more than replacing the unit; the Oster lasted the longest. I decided that a stainless unit would be better, no breakage or plastic bleed. I was slightly put off by the reviews that mentioned rust. So far this has not appeared to be a problem - however I empty and clean my steamer after every use. I took the unit apart and put away 2 of the basket sets and just kept the unit on the counter with 1 steamer basket (takes up much less room). I am hoping and expecting to get many years use from this unit.FYI my unit came with a stainless steam ring (and a plastic ring not mentioned in the paperwork). An email to Secura got a quick response explaining that both should be used and that the stainless ring might not work as well alone. Seems he was correct - there is much more steam with both.September 21, 2013 I have been meaning to update my previous review because the problem I have is important to note for any purchasing this unit.It takes a lot of water to operate - more than any steamer I have ever used. The water must be dumped after one use because it gets some sort of white foam on it. Because we have well water I tried filtered water and once bottled water - it makes no different. Because of the water usuage I would not recommend this unit.

Lazy way to cook healthy meals!
Sad to see this is not currently available on Amazon. Hoping Secura brings it back soon for you all, but will go ahead and review it. I bought the 9 quart model a few months ago. I use it with store bought filtered water, and dry the heating element after each use. So far, no sign of problems/deterioration of element. I got the large model with a specific plan of cooking in mind, which has worked beautifully. To make plan work, I also purchased little stainless steel dishes for use in the steamer. I found that Kids Konserve lunch containers and U Konserve lunch containers work great. Sample meal: 5 oz rice in 2cup Kids container with water to fill near top, root vegetables & other long cook vegetables chopped into 1" chunks inside 1 cup Kids container with no water. Greens chopped into another 1 c kids container. No water needed in the vegetable containers. 6 cups water in bottom section of steamer. Place all kids containers, without lids on one 9" secura tray & set timer for 60 min. Come back in 20 to 30 min to remove cooked greens, or can leave in if like them tender. Come back at 45 min point to remove all vegetables. I use canning jar tongs to lift out the hot metal dishes. Come back 15 minutes later to remove the rice and unplug the steamer. I now have a perfectly cooked vegetarian meal. I'm vegan right now, but could have added meats or cheese without risk of burning. If I leave foods in too long they still are excellent, just more tender. I let the metal dishes cool a bit and then eat the food right out of the containers I cooked them in. I rinse out the secura tray and outer ring with water. And empty and dry the base. Leaving me with a full meal and 3 small dishes to wash. This works for almost all grains, and Lentils /split peas, and any vegetables. I don't have to be in the kitchen while the food cooks because there's no risk of burning or overcooking. The food tastes better than any other method of cooking, including pressure cooking. I don't have to use oils or fats except if I want them. To me, currently on a strict macrobiotic diet plan, it's the perfect Cooking System. I usually cook 2 meals at a time by adding anothet secura tray with kids conserve containers exactly as the first. I get varied meals by what ingredients I put in the containers. I can even add a 3rd tray and so 3 meals at a time. I can use the larger U Konserve containers when I want bigger portions of any single item, or, if I want A LOT, just cook the item directly in the secura tray itself. It all works. I cook almost all my meals this way, and it works tremendously for me. Easiest way for me to get consistent healthy meals that I've ever found. If the steamer ever breaks, I'd buy another in a minute. Yes, there is some oil residue from under the rims of the outer rings at first which takes effort to clean and possibly half dozen or more uses of the steamer before it disappears completely. But for me, that's not going to stop me from enjoying all the tremendous benefits this steamer gives me. I'm disabled, and in the past often have been too sick to sit up long enough to monitor the stove and cook a healthy meal. With the steamer, I can always toss a good meal together. Even by using frozen veggies, if too sick to clean and chop veggies. And I can rest in bed while it all cooks. It works great for me! ;-)
