It works great and is cheaper than the pads the filter comes with. **Q: Can I use it by itself in place of my carbon filter cartridge while medicating the tank?** A: Yes works good for that ... can be cut to size…these are 3 large filters great for pond use…you can just use filter floss if have 50 gallon or smaller fish tank or buy smaller filter pads …I have 1500 gal pond these 3 last all year **Q: Would i use this in place of the black sponges that come with the red sea max e series?** A: I use this product as a foam screen filter for my pump/filter.
