It closes when you pull it closed and can be adjusted so it will not close on its own. I took one apart accidently ( I don't recommend this) and was impressed with the mechanism. They have very little to wear out and should last for a very long time. The install instructions are a little tricky: be sure to pay attention to the points of measurement. One side is the hole in the bracket; the other side is the pivot on the support - not the bracket. ### ⭐ Support yes, soft closure no *by L***. on May 29, 2025* I would call these supports and not soft closures. Even when the adjustment is cranked super tight, the lid to the cedar chest I put them on would still slam shut after 45 degrees. And with the adjustment super tight, it was difficult to get the lid back to the full open position. Also they came with plastic bushing which are not pictured. The limited instructions make no mention of the bushing which I had to press in place with my shop vise.
