I previously used a small doormat with a plastic back for my dog's bowls. It didn't work as well as I wanted since the water could still get through small holes in the plastic. The Soggy Doggy does not have a plastic backing, but it absorbs so much water that the water doesn't get onto my hardwood floors. The Soggy Doggy is soft and fluffy. The pattern looks OK. As one other user mentioned, I wish it didn't have a bone pattern on it and was just plain. Washing and drying the mat can be tricky. I have a washing machine that has a 1400 RPM setting and even that can't get much (if any) of the water out of the mat. It comes out sopping wet. I line dry the mat since the dryer just goes and goes with this mat in it.
