Seems to be MDF and correct in size as described. I don't recommend getting this if you plan on removing the carpeting. That was my intention and ended up with a huge mess.

I can't believe they can't make a speaker ring that fits it was too small had to do Some grinding around it so it would sit flush

These rings are made in China and do not meet any kind of spec's that would allow a person to use them with any confidence of quality. They leave about 1/4 inch of space between the speaker making the mounting holes unattainable on at least two or three screw holes. My advise from experience: MAKE YOUR OWN RINGS. That's what I had to do. If you're looking for quality Make your Own! Compass and a Jig saw!

They didn’t exactly “wow” me, but they did the job and look good enough.

They did exactly what I needed them to do. They don't come drilled, so you will have to measure and drill as required.
