    Subtle, important ideas marred by egotism.

Timothy Leary has a full frontal assault approach to conveying ideas. The ideas are intriguing and I already favor the notion that the universe teams with consciousness and that consciousness is part of evolutionary process. I like the octaval model as a very useful model to be found in the periodic table, music, light, and in this case tarot cards . What I have a hard time with is the idea that Leary is the most informed expert on the internal pattern governing growth and change in personal and human evolution. His claims to special knowledge get old and aggressive, like someone pushing a religion with all the answers. He is up-front that he is using a National inquirer approach to metaphysics, but that doesn't help.He makes at least one major scientific error when he asserts that there are 48 chromosomes in the human genome,24 pairs. He does this to connect to the need for 24 major arcana in Tarot. The problem is glaring. There are 46 chromosomes, 23 pairs. This standout because he presents a good deal of science as though he understands physics, subatomic physics and biology at a very expert level. I have heard talks and feel in general that Leary had very important ideas and pushed psychedelic research with passion but also with reasonable restraint. His playfulness was often misinterpreted. But I also feel that he became over defensive and overaggressive in ways that undermine the richness of his message.

The brain has eight or is it twelve circuits. Normal functioning only involves the first four. These are mapped by archaic symbol systems such as the tarot or the qabalah. Doesn’t quite fit so had to invent a couple of extra cards.Interesting enough ideas - though not at all original. Fine fodder for SF or Occult novels.  But honestly what a load of nonsense.And it’s not even written well. Garbled and rambling.Someone did too many drugs.

Classic title, glad its still around.  Quality of this edition could be a lot better,hard to read in places, and hard enough to grok in the first place.  But as forcontent,  Eight Stars!!
