A layer of the bamboo laminate near the cutting surface showed a crack (see photo) that suggests a separation between layers of bamboo. I'm in public health and worry that this crack may harbor food juices and bacteria despite best efforts at cleaning. It essentially makes this cutting board worse than useless, in my opinion. I've taken great care of this board: handwash only, regular oiling followed by application of cutting board wax. One other aspect to be aware of is the rough particles of bamboo that are shed by the board which may just be the nature of bamboo cutting boards perhaps. Updated and revised (March 1, 2018): Rating changed from 1 star to 5 stars for customer service experience In response to the review, I received a communication from Sharon at SoulFino who dispatched a replacement cutting board which I received today. But see hint on saving edges on fine knives. *by L***B on March 6, 2018* I got tired of boards that would warp, slip, wobble and otherwise make food preparation a chore (or even risky). So I wanted a board that was super solid, stable, and large enough for various tasks. This board serves well. Be advised, however: (1) This board is hefty (ca. 6 lbs) and large, so make sure you don't mind wrestling with it a bit if you don't keep it on your counter-top; (2) The bamboo appears to be somewhat denser than maple, so you might have to retouch the edge of your chef's knife more frequently (I have a 1950's Sabatier carbon steel Chefs knife). You can save the edge by using a light touch, which works fine if you handle the blade properly...and all knives should ALWAYS be handled properly, something I learned in Boy Scouts 63 years ago. Several pluses: (1) This board holds up very well to heavy chopping with a cleaver, something I do a lot; (2) Aside from its weight, it is easy to clean, important if you're working with chicken; (3) It comes pre-treated. The Manufacturer recommends rubbing it with food-grade mineral oil or equivalent every 30 days. (Note: you can get that in the laxative section of your drug store). The board can be used on either side. One side is flat across, and the other had a groove to catch drippings.
