Until this point, I had assumed that all rice was flavorless, and used as a cheap filler. However, this is not the case with black rice.Black rice is nutty, slightly sweet, and carries some pleasants earthy undertones. Additionally, it offers nutrients that are not present in other rice varieties. It is rich and antioxidants, vitamin/minerals, has a healthy amount of fiber, and anthocyanins, which can help boost heart health. Being health conscious, I had always defaulted to brown rice, but to put a delicately, brown rice is a bit depressing.The biggest draw back of black rice is the cost. Typically, it runs at a high premium to both brown and white rice. Rebirth Rice offers the best value that I have found. While there may be cheaper options, be weary of counterfeit black rice, as it can be common is cheap Chinese brands. This rice has a natural appearance, and passes the vinegar test.In terms of quality and taste, Rebirth Rice's heirloom black rice is among the best that I have had. Each packet is vacuumed sealed, which helps preserve freshness and taste.This rice variety seems stickier than other black rice varieties that I have tried. I quite enjoy sticky rice, so this doesn't bother me. We have made Thai sticky rice pudding, which is phenomenal, if it is your cup of tea.Apart from the taste, Rebirth Rice appears to be a reputable small business, which sources its rice from small Thai black rice farms in Phrao, one of Chiang Mai's mountainous rural districts.Well the rice is not certified organic, they don't use synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Additionally, they lab test their rice every couple of years for agrochemicals, arsenic and mercury. I contacted the founder of Rebirth Rice about the testing process, and he seemed happy to answer all of my questions. I sensed that he is passionate about this business.If you can afford it, this rice is a must buy!
