The glass tubes are always far too delicate, and more often than not they break too easily. I've bought several Brannan products over the years, and they have all been excellent quality, and very accurate, so when I saw this rather attractive round needle thermometer, I thought I might give one a test run. The rear casing is made from good quality ABS plastic, if it was metal then the metal coils that react to temperature change would give an inaccurate reading. The main body of the thermometer is a nice metal bronze antique style affair, very clear to read, and the three hands,coloured black,red and blue are also made of metal. Setting both Hi & Low temperature needles is very straight forward, but the main black temperature needle gives a surprisingly accurate reading, that due to its design takes quite a while to settle. That is a good thing, because you know the temperature is being measured carefully. Even the small humidity gauge beneath, responds slowly, and quite accurately as well,compared to the very accurate digital Oregan Scientific weather station on my wall, it works well considering it's a very basic leaf spring construction. Without having seen this temperature gauge in the flesh before purchasing it, there was always a risk that the £13 had been too much to pay, after all it does look very nice in the photographs, but thankfully it represents very good value for money, and above all it's very accurate and if cared for properly should last many years.
