If it went no further than that, it would be an essential book for anyone interested in horology.But there are pictures! Among them are dozens of breathtaking, superbly printed color photos of Daniels' watches, many larger than life, inside and out, in nearly microscopic detail. With unprecedented clarity the photos show Daniels' hand-engraved and rose-engine turned dials and the graceful shapes and immaculate finish of the hundreds of inner components that cannot be seen outside the case. Daniels was both artist and technical innovator; both sides of his creative work are exhibited beautifully here.Then there's Daniels' life story, so unlikely you would think it fiction. He rose from grinding, Dickensian poverty to the inner circles of British aristocracy, propelled by a formidable intellect, an heroic work ethic, unmatched artistic skill and unstoppable ambition. Since then I have purchased every one of his books to learn what he knows and how he thinks. Being a camera repairman for over 42 years I have an affinity for precise things that are mechanical. This is the best book I've ever read on both his personal work as well as the way he thought when approaching the problems of designing completely new ways for the mechanical watch to keep time.I am also a fan of the beauty of the design of his watches and there are no others which can compete with his work.I read biographies to learn about other people and how they think and live. George Daniels was such an inspiration coming from a "street urchin" to "the man with million dollar hands" that his story and the beauty of his creations will inspire even if you don't have a passion for watches. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Dividing seconds *by B***N on May 5, 2013* With a plan from Scientific American`s Amateur Scientist, in the sixties I built a very accurate electronic timepiece using tunnel diodes. The process was enjoyable as I was good with electronics and things mechanical. After reading A Master Watchmaker and His Art, I realize I should have spent my "time" building my first mechanical watch and who knows how many more after. The images in this book are superb.
