Otherwise I use 0000 steel wool. **Q: How dark would this turn unfinished maple?** A: An old trick, moisten your finger tip and touch the wood. Then imagine more depth and richer color. Maple will not turn dark. Try the the wet finger you'll see the color. Mineral oil will give gloss no color enrichment. Watco oil will give color but no gloss So you need to ask yourself what kind of finish are you looking for? Lastly grab a piece of maple and experiment. If you playing with a cutting board then it's block oil or mineral oil. **Q: Is this considered food safe for use on kitchen knife scales?** A: Tru Oil isn't considered food safe, although I fall to see how it would come into contact with the food being prepared.
