The bracket is attached with two Phillips bolts / nuts that go through a thicker bolt on the sides. Remove those (1 minute with a screw driver) and it allows you to take the black bracket off. Makes mounting it anywhere a lot easier. Prior tenant installed a wood block to two studs in my garage (for a punching bag) so I was able to reuse those screws and block. Screws are four 4” lag bolts bolted to a 2x4. Definitely overkill, since the unit only weighs maybe 15 pounds. If you’re having a hard time figuring out what screws to use, take the black bracket and go to a home repair store and find some lag bolts that fit snugly in the holes. Retractibleness is good. As others have pointed out, you kind of have to find the sweet spot for it to catch/stay, but it’s not hard to find at any length. Recoil is strong once you start allowing it to wind back up.
