They are 100% glass, they do not have flat metal nibs attached like cheaper dip pens. Instead the tip is whorled glass, integral to the piece. All the pens arrived with soft plastic tip protectors and they were rolled in bubble wrap, good idea. Unfortunately, one of the six pens was very slightly chipped at the tip during manufacture. This makes its tip drag and catch on my paper, and splotch the W&N ink, so I will have to try to sand off its sharp edge. But all in all they're lovely to hold, very pretty things. Thanks to small variations in their tips, I noted nice variation in the lines they make (thicker to thinner) which is good for calligraphy or script by hand. Not as perfect or magnificent as my favourite glass dip pen which was handmade in Murano/Venice -- and priced accordingly -- but these pens are good value for the money and fully acceptable for what they are. Very nice starter set for an art journal enthusiast or greeting card maker. Review: These all arrived intact. The bubble wrap was rolled into a narrow box, and I was very careful while unrolling it. The ends of the pens have protective sleeves on them, and I am super careful removing and replacing those, too. All of the pens are beautiful, and the art store sells similar glass dip pens for $15 each. Even if some are scratchy, the ends can be rubbed down a little, and it is still a better value than gambling that one from the store will be perfect. At least with this set, there are six chances for it to be good, and none seem like they will be off or unusable. I have rubbed the ends of three of them on the fabric of an upholstered chair, for several passes, while rotating the pens, as it seemed to have good tension and just enough fabric coarseness, which wasn't much. That took the snaggy bits off the ends, and they all seem just right now. I have an assortment of inks and watercolor paint to try with these, and my daughter already drew a picture with one. They work VERY smoothly and supply ink as needed (you will discover at least some control, but nothing like a quill) the ink wipes right off the pen so you can go from color to color with the same pen or change pens.
