There is nothing to get grubby over time - because of it's very simple design. I considered other designs but dismissed them because I suspect they will were either flimsy or fragile or might break because of moving parts or become difficult to keep clean. This can take a few knocks or be dropped without worry. I do not use this for running and I'm sure runners out there would realise this type of bottle is not really designed to be used while moving.
