Hope that helps **Q: Can i smash it to make it smaller?** A: If that’s something you want to do but it would make a terrible mess in your tank. Fluval stratum makes smaller soil. **Q: Can you boil this to sterilize before reusing?** A: I do not know the answer to that. I use it to propagate my plants with as a medium. I reuse it but I don’t clean it in any way. **Q: Will this work with tiny rooted plants like mini hair grass?** A: I have had this in a small five gallon shrimp tank for over a year and I can say I really like it best! My plants have done exceptionally well, but Hairgrass not so much because the roots are so tiny. If you spend a lot of time replanting it might take off but it didn't for me. You might have to go with microsword or some other grassy stuff. The substrate itself is easiest to clean and doesn't break down like the other types.
