They make a world of difference for comfort and isolation. This is not really optional.The sounds quality for these are solid. Good, flat curve perfect for tuning a solid EQ. If you think Beats by Dre sound great, then you'll hate these.The over the ear style wiring is a pain. Not really sure what purpose these serves, but even with the provided ugly rubber hooks, the wire doesn't stay tucker behind my ears. It's a constant fight while walking to work.I hate the rubber coating on the cable. Pretty stiff and has a tendency to develop coil memory. So when I uncoil the wire, it likes to stay twisted up.But in spite of the design aspect that I don't agree with, I don't regret the purchase at all. I get no audio unless i wiggle the cord.
