This unit is a countertop model. It works by filling the top portion with water which then filters down to the lower portion and stays in that tank until you drain it. Both the Berkey and Mulitpure filter are excellent and have great filtering ability. There are independent lab tests from both that verify this. You would want to search for "performance data sheet" or "lab test results" for each product. Keep in mind there are minimum detectable levels for the lab's equipment, but both excel and produce comparable results. The Berkey filters however edge out in service life. Each black filter (sold in pairs only) has a service life of 3000 gallons (this is an additive effect, meaning a set of two filters needs to be changed after 6000 gallons, a set of 4 at a time can do 12000 gallons). The multipure unit has a service life of 960 gallons. This gives the Berkey a huge advantage in total cost of ownership since it not only costs less up front, but the replacement filters last significantly longer and cost less. The Berkey filter is a gravity filter and will require you to regularly fill the top tank and can take some time to produce filtered water. The multipure connects to your water and produces filtered water immediately. The Berkey's downside is that you need to remember to fill the tank, which we do after washing dishes. I have had my Berkey for roughly six years now and have done very little maintenance to it. I've only cleaned the unit twice and it still performs amazingly and I haven't had to change filters yet. We estimate an 8 year service life for our two filters and household water use.
