A flexible nylon strip feeds into a head, when pulled, closes the loop tighter and tighter via a tongue-in-groove ratchet. The tongue is metal (most of the cheaper ones are plastic) so when this is cinched down, it's very unlikely the catch will give way. These are much higher quality than the kind you would generally find in a local hardware store.
