They are cut where the moth came out. I degummed a bunch of them and stretched them into mawata and spun yarn from them. Great fun. **Q: How are these made? Are the silk worms killed?** A: When my kids were young, we raised silkworms for fun. When they are ready to emerge from their cocoons, they squirt out a liquid that softens the silk at one end of the cocoon and they push their way out. That leaves a cocoon that can't be used for making silk (silk production requires killing the pupa before it emerges as a moth, otherwise the silk strand is broken.) So this is a good way to use the cocoons from the moths that were allowed to live. Woo hoo! (BTW, the moths are very cute.
