However with time the material gets more brittle and will break and fall off when someone bumps there door against the pole. Regarding the mantle itself. It comes pressed and squished up, which is fine because it's just fabric. You have to grab the ring and pull on the fabric an kind of shape it. I've learned from experience that before you light it and while it's soft you have to try to shape it somewhat like a nice rounded shape. Once it's been lit, it'll keep that shape. Following the instructions you need to turn off the gas insert the mantle and then light it on fire - then wait till it's burned through. It'll turn black and smoke a lot then it will turn ashy colored, and the flame will go out.
