It is recommended to wear ear protection when the whole set of bagpipes is being played indoors, protection is not needed for the chanter itself. This is a beautiful chanter set. **Q: What songs are in the book?** A: The first half of the book teaches how to play the chanter. If you require a long length chanter I recommend the Frazer Warnock Long chanter **Q: Is this a good size for a child (age 9)? Thank you.** A: Thanks for your question. My son is a big 8 year old (almost 9) and he has a child's chanter. The full size chanter will probably be too big. The problem is the player's pads of their fingers need to be flat over the holes and with a chanter that is too big the child can't reach the last hole for their pinky finger. Personally I'd recommend a child's chanter, they may outgrow it in a year or two but at least they won't develop bad habits in that first year. I hope this helps.
