I have not had the guts (yet) or committed to the time required to tackle bigger projects but I do quilt fairly often on practice samples and study quilting via online classes, books, and DVDs. (For my quilting samples, I buy felt fabric yardage usually from Wal-Mart because it is cheap and then cut it into about 40" x 15"pieces. Then fold it in half to get a 20" x 15" piece to practice quilting on. I just can't stand to practice on good fabric because it ultimately gets thrown away.)I have to admit that I'm a Lori Kennedy fan. I've enjoyed reading her articles in a popular quilting magazine (can't remember which one) and I have especially liked her two Craftsy on-line classes "Divide and Conquer: Creative Quilting for Any Space" and "Creative Free-Motion Techniques from Doodle to Design". Because those classes covered so much, I guess I'm spoiled. When I read through Lori's new book, I was a bit disappointed because it seemed like it covered most of what was in the first Craftsy class...I was wanting more. Don't get me wrong, I like the book a lot and highly recommend it.Since you probably haven't taken one of Lori's Craftsy classes (can you tell I highly recommend them? No, I don't get any kickback for saying that), let me tell you about the book ... It does a good job of explaining the supplies and set up of free-motion quilting and stitch quality without getting bogged down in the details. (Some books make my eyes glaze over when they keep saying the same thing over and over again.) Pictures throughout the book are excellent and you can easily see stitch detail. The designs are grouped into chapters of loops & lines, spirals, leaves, flowers, pictorial, and circles & squares. Within those groups each design is broken down and shown step-by-step. I really like that the basic design is shown and then shown with tweaks like echoing or intertwining the design with an additional line of quilting to create a completely new design. It takes each design from simple to outstanding. There are several leaf designs that are very nicely done. I especially like the oak leaf with acorns which is shown used within a block and as border quilting. There are 144 pages and the book has a spiral back so that the pages lay flat (although you cannot fold the book back on itself.) ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is by far my favorite.
