## Description

ZIWI Peak Venison Recipe Wet Cat Food - 85G : desertcart.ae: Pet Supplies

Review: My cat loved it but , - I have 2 points on this - too expensive - has chickpeas in the ingredients Was expecting high quality animal source of protein for this price , not worth it 🤷‍♀️
Review: I can only imagine that New Zealanders pay half the price for this food (if that!), which is just another reason on a very long list of reasons I wish could move to Middle Earth. But I digress. This used to be the sole food that was tolerable to an IBD cat I had years ago. Back then the bone shards were scary large and I would pick them out, supplementing egg shell powder for the lost calcium source. No pet owner wants to go through that hassle, especially for the price, so I'm relieved to see that the pieces of bone are now small enough to be digested easily. Yes, they're supposed to be there. Why, you might ask. Because Ziwi Peak is one of the only cat food manufacturers that mimics a cat's natural diet via type of ingredients and ratios. You'd have to buy food from a supplier that specializes in raw food diets with the appropriate muscle meat/organ/bone ratio to get a better approximation of the ideal prey diet. House cats have the same GI system as tigers or lions, they haven't evolved the way dogs have. The closer you can get to a natural diet, the healthier they should be. So, anyway, I ended up with two more IBD cats with various food allergies and embarked on a whirlwind cat food adventure in the hopes of finding something that wouldn't cause any issues. Ziwi Peak was tried, cats wouldn't touch it, we moved on to other novel protein-based foods and, still, the vomiting continued. We tried the commercial raw foods in novel protein sources and, still, the vomiting continued. We got a prescription for a hypoallergenic commercial food and it was ok. Vomiting was limited, but the cats needed mega doses of probiotics/prebiotics and egg yolk powder to keep hairballs under control. Eventually the cats began vomiting up the prescription food and I found out that cross-contamination is a pretty big problem in the pet food industry. I started to wonder if the problem wasn't the protein source so much as *where* the food was manufactured. This is when I decided that we'd give Ziwi Peak another shot, but use it exclusively. The cats were less than thrilled with the abrupt change in diet, especially since the healthier food tends to not be as appetizing as the less nutritious chicken and fish in gravy type foods (I mean, come on. That's like saying, "Here, would you prefer this pizza for dinner or a grilled chicken breast and steamed vegetables?" to a person.) You've got to be sneaky with them when switching to a healthier diet. Mine go bonkers for freeze-dried duck liver treats and I decided to use this as an incentive to eat the Ziwi Peak by crushing the treats into a fine powder and sprinkling it over the food. I only had to do this for two days before they started digging into the the Ziwi Peak sans the extra motivation. The new diet hasn't been a miracle cure for my cat with severe IBD, though her condition has improved significantly. It's been far more successful for my cat with moderate IBD. I've been able to cut back on supplements and I'm seeing an all-around boost to their general health. I add a little water to the food and can tell they're no longer dehydrated since the water bowl is rarely touched. They used to drain it, plus 1/4 of another bowl, by the end of the day when they were mostly eating dry prescription food. That's not a good sign. Cats don't have a very strong thirst drive to begin with and chronic dehydration is a common cause of kidney problems later in life. If you change nothing else about their diet, please get your cats off of dry food if you can. It's the worst thing you can feed them. I guess I'll have to keep paying these ridiculous prices for food since it's the only thing that's made a noticeable difference in their health. I'm hoping to use it as a stepping stone to a non-commerical raw food diet. A natural diet in raw form is easiest on their digestion. It's a daunting prospect, but I think we're up for another cat food adventure.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this an outdated label I thought they no longer contained guar gum and sodium tropolyphosphate?**
A: Hi Nicola, yes this is an outdated label and although they no longer add the sodium tropolyphosphate, the NEW formula contains tetrasodium pyrophosphate, which is a toxic chemical that is used as a flavoring , however, this is also used in cleansers and rust removal. I also found it on a hazard list. I even contacted someone at ZiwiPeak and after he looked into it himself, he was baffled as to why it was being used. I just wanted to make other ZiwiPeak consumers aware of this since we think we are paying extra to have the best food for our pets, however, one single ingredient can negate this.

**Q: The label, name and consistency/color of the food changed in March 2017. Has anyone had issues?**
A: Hi there! Depending on where you buy it, you may be offered the older formula or this new one. The new formula for the rabbit & lamb has chickpeas and my cats LOVE it. The traditional fat-on-the-top is gone but there is a "gravy" like juice which my cats go nuts over. I wasn't excited about chickpeas, but my boys are loving it. We've been using ZP for several years, 1 cat eats primarily this and the other cat will eat it but prefers Dr. Harvey's Oracle- that was until this new formula came, now both boys are going nuts over it! No health issues noted so far. We love ZP!!

**Q: They say no unnecessary carbohydrates but have added chick peas! How healthy is that?**
A: I talked to Ziwi Peak about this because I was also concerned. It's only a small amount of chick pea to thicken it, it is not being used as a primary protein in the food. My cat can't tolerate any carbs much, and she is 16 years old and does wonderfully on this brand, especially the chicken.

**Q: How many cans come in this pack?**
A: 3oz cans come in cases of 24. 6oz cans come in cases of 12.
