If you look at the pinouts of supplemental PCI-E power connectors you will find that pins one through three are +12V (usually yellow) and pins four through eight are common ground (GND - usually black). Cable colour may vary between PSU manufacturer although many PSUs on the market just have black coloured cables for aesthetics. Another way to look at it is that there is one row of pins is all GND and one row that has 3 +12V pins next to 1 GND pin. This lone GND pin is a also a presence detect pin to identify to your card that you have connected an 8 pin connector. If you flip the orientation of the connectors through 180° you will have 3 +12v pins and one GND pin connected to the same rail causing a short circuit. This is because the row of GND pins are all commoned together on the adapter. You’ll need to buy the orientation you need. Having seen the one star reviews whinging about can't run a "powerful" card I can attest that the card I have pulls over 430w when under load and not even a blip.
