The KUROCHIKU bamboo is green colored in spring, with black blotches appearing in early autumn before it fully changes to black in the later season. Our bamboo are sourced from the Kansai region and are never treated with any chemicals or pesticides. We are extremely proud to bring you a high quality hande-made chasen.Please note, although our chasen are hand-carved in Japan, they are not Takayama chasen, our chasen are made to be a more economical choice for daily use. BEFORE FIRST USE: Soak the bamboo tines in warm water to soften bristles to prevent it from easy breakage. Gently whisk back and forth for about one minute, it's now ready to be used! To avoid damaging any of the bamboo prongs, try not to scratch or pressing down too hard while whisking. The prongs should barely touch the bottom of the bowl.AFTER EACH USE: Use cold water to rinse the bristles. Pat dry with paper towel or shake off excess moisture. It shows no signs of weakening or damage on the prongs, and I am not even particularly gentle with it. It finally did develop a crack on the hollow handle after about 9 months of everyday use. The crack has no effect at all since the handle is still completely solid. I like to microwave a cup of water for 3 min. until boiling. I then submerge the chasen in the hot water while sifting my tea. When softened by the hot water like this, the bamboo is quite sturdy and resistant to breakage.Update 9/25/23. Still good with no broken prongs and over 1000 times used. I guess this thing is just going to last forever. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Good Quality for the Price *by T***O on Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2021* I only recommend chasens from Japan as many from outside Japan are treated with some pretty nasty anti-fungal chemicals. It is always good to rinse your chasen with water before and after use and it is natural for the bamboo whisk to spread with time. For the price, this one is very nice for everyday use. I have a much more expensive one from Japan I use when I have guest, but for most this one will be fine for any occasion.
