This book desperately needs updated formatting

While the book may contain good information in easier to larger print, the antiquated black and white photos lack crisp clarity. As such, it's difficult to see certain exercises and I fear doing them incorrectly and worsening my already severe CTS. There are a few pictures where I can barely differentiate a hand placed on a table.I think I'll research National Institutes of Health and other highly reliable sources such as Harvard, Mayo Clinic, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons to obtain information.Maybe 30 years ago this would have been acceptable, but not in 2023.

Excellent Book - Explains Carpal Tunnel Syndrom & How to Combat It Effectively

*by G***A on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 12, 2016*

This was suggested as a purchase by a reviewer of the wrist braces I purchased when I started experiencing extreme carpal tunnel aggravation in the mornings. It's not expensively made, but it does an excellent job of explaining why we have carpal tunnel syndrome and what can be done to combat it. There are several daily massages that are easy to do on your own and take about 3 minutes. They definitely help with symptoms. I have had carpal tunnel irritation and mild symptoms off and on for years, but just in the last couple of months have started having more severe symptoms. What finally tipped me over the edge was waking up a couple days in a row and buzzing/tingling pain in my hands so bad that I couldn't even close my fingers into a fist. It would improve over the course of the day. I'm small-boned, and double-jointed, and have a tendency to sleep with my wrists all wonky (in addition to doing a lot of hands on keyboard time in the last decade in my job as a roving IT administrator). I also recently had a baby, and I read that the water retention following childbirth, especially after an emergency c-section, can cause swelling in that area, which further exacerbates carpal tunnel symptoms. My doctor recommended that I wear wrist braces at night, which I have started doing, but I also do the three minute massage every day, which improved blood flow to that area, also relieving symptoms. The book mentions that studies have been done in which people wear the wrist braces all day vs wearing them just at night, and there was no significant difference in symptom relief, so I'm happily just wearing them at night. I can definitely tell the difference if I don't wear the braces, and I can also tell the difference if I don't do the daily massage. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting a concise explanation of the why of carpal tunnel syndrome with common sense advice on what you can do to combat it.

Easy to Read, Understand, and Follow the Directions!

*by M***R on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 4, 2018*

A doctor suggested that I might be developing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) and suggested some exercises for me to perform at home, which I did, which didn't work. Facing potential surgery, I panicked and ordered a bunch of stuff off the Intenet, including this book. In the time it took for the book to arrive, I tried an overnight wrist guard that caused more harm than good and threw it away. When this book arrived, I approached it like a 1st year medical student with several highlighters and a pen to take notes. It is written simply and easy to understand and follow. Within the first 19 pages, the book had already made it quite clear to me that I probably did not have CTS at all. Although that was a relief, I still had CTS-like symptoms, so I kept reading and following the instructions. Although I don't think the CTS-specific exercises particularly helped me, other advice about good hand mechanics and self-care habits eventually helped (keeping my wrist more neutral, taking frequent rest and stretch breaks, adjusting the height of my chair and the arm rests on my chair, professional targeted massage, self-massage, and chiropractic care). I stopped reading at page 40, but realize now that I should probably pick it back up at Chapter 7, Tracking Recovery, or I may lose track of symptoms sneaking back in and stop doing the things that are helping it stay at bay. Then, of course, there's the preventative chapter I didn't even get to yet, that I most certainly should still read. So, instead of giving this book away after completing this review, as I intended to do 15 minutes ago when I started this review, I believe I'll read the last two chapters now and then maybe give it away. Or not. Who knows. I may keep it. It's pretty handy..... (LOL, see what I did there?)
