When you install the drum in the tub you are handling something around 2 feet in diameter in a 2.25 foot hole, but the shaft is only about 1/2" diameter. A few hundreths of an inch of mis-alignment during installation could damage the seal, allowing a tiny bit of wash water to get past it, leading to short bearing life. I suspect alignment is as difficult at the factory as it is in the field.
