The cutting head is wedged on with a reinforcing metal strap to make the head and the handle last for years. After digging with this for most of the day this tool is still sharp, which tells me the metal is high quality not the white metal or that pot-metal stuff that easily bends and breaks. So beware of other tools that look like this as one but are not Japanese. They most likely are cheap metals that can contain toxins so be aware of that too. Here in eastern Tennessee we have very hard clay soil and lots of rocks in the ground... with roots too.
