Well written, extremely unique travel book. Twenty five years ago the author basically hopped on a mountain bike in Ohio, rode to NYC and hopped on a plane to Scandinavia (chosen because it was the cheapest flight to Europe he could find). There the adventure begins. Solo riding his bike down Europe, into Africa and across the Sahara (mid summer no less), and on, ending up in Hong Kong where the last of his $5,000 bankroll was used up.The trip was roughly 25 years ago and he traveled across places like Syria, the frontier lands of Pakistan, etc.-places no American outside of the military could go today. It's truly amazing he didn't die several times during this ride. Many, many times he was helped out by the poorest of the poor in countries we now consider hostile.In the forward the author links to his website where some of the pictures from his trip can be found. I definitely suggest following along with those pictures as you read.The book is very well written and documents a truly stupendous adventure that probably can never be repeated. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars This Guy Knows How to Suffer *by D***E on Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2021* It’s an interesting books and the writing is good. There’s a lot of wonder and beauty and joy. But there’s an awful lot of suffering. At times it feels gratuitous. But I admire the author’s perseverance. It inspires me to get out of my comfort zone and take more risks. Without meaning to, the book has a bit of. “how not to do it” message to it. It certainly had that effect on me. So much of the struggle, it seems, could have been avoided with better planning and/or better resources. For example, early in his trip he crosses North Africa and large chunks of the Sahara in July! A 2-3 month later start would have made that stretch a lot more enjoyable and less life-threatening. His story is very well written and is a must read for those who want a first hand account of a person immersing himself in the people, culture, and the journey with a determination to learn and grow. I especially am taken by his view of what touring by bicycle is.
