A 3-fold has a hinged rib and folds in half after you collapse the umbrella and the handle slides up into itself (telescopes) to make a very compact umbrella when it is folded. I am probably not explaining it very well. Hope this helps a little. **Q: Doe anyone know if the grey liner is really grey; the two-fold appears to have a beige liner whereas the three-fold liner looks silver?** A: The liner is black. Take a look at the side panel of photos that show different views of the umbrella. Click on the one that shows the underside. It is black. I purchased the gold umbrella as a gift for a friend. It is gorgeous and definitely gold on top, but the liner is black. I have read that black actually deflects harmful sun rays better than white. I am not a scientist, so I don't know that for sure. But that is the purpose of a parasol. It is supposed to protect you from the sun. Hope this helps. **Q: What is the length of the rod?** A: I don't remember. It broke the third time my niece used it.
