You need something metal to get the wax out - I would highly reccomend spending the few dollars for a set of steel spatulas because not only is it helpful to get the wax out of the container with, you sort of need them to apply the wax and blend it onto your skin. 2. To soften the wax up, warm it up by holding it in your hands and kneading it. It will take some time, and it'll be very sticky but once you're done warming it up, vaseline will help with the application. Knead it with the bottom of your hands until it's very pliable and do your best to knead all of those little hard pieces in it. If you miss some, that's what the steel spatulas help with when you're blending it onto your skin. 3. YOU NEED VASELINE TO APPLY THE WAX. The wax will be very sticky. I reccomend shaping the wax how you want it before using any vaseline just so that it sticks to your skin. Then use your fingers to blend the edges of the wax onto your skin. Review: Used to create "healed" amputation scars on knees - I'm a very happy first-timer! - I bought this specifically for a special effect for a short film. We wanted to create the look of someone with both legs amputated. After looking at photos online, I decided to have the actress sit on her knees in a wheelchair, and then created thick t-shaped scars across her knees. I first applied dark bluish lines to her knees with eye shadow, then applied the wax over the top of the lines. I used a small putty knife to blend the edges of the wax into the skin. At that point, it looks awful - just really rough and broken. But wait! Adding a bit of mineral oil to my finger allowed me to smooth out the rough edges. The wax is translucent, so the underlying makeup color shown through, and made for pretty convincing scars. I did add just a touch of color to the wax itself - again with eye shadow - and blended it with my finger. The actress had to bend her knees, and despite that, the wax stayed in place, without any extra glue/spirit gum. I also used a dull knife to add a "seam" line to the scars, and some other cross-hatch suture-like textures. I considered adding actual thread as stitches, but wanted the scars to look mostly healed. I'm new to this kind of makeup, so was really impressed that I was able to pull off the look that I was after with just a few practice runs. Very happy with this stuff! Apply spirit gum to the skin first, then after it gets tacky, tap it with a loose cotton ball to get some cotton stuck to the spirit gum. Dab on some more spirit gum and then apply the nose and scar wax, shaping it before the spirit gum begins to dry (you have about 3 minutes.) To remove, peel off the nose and scar wax and use spirit gum remover on a cotton ball to get the cotton and spirit gum off. Spirit gum is a type of tree sap and some users are allergic. But yes, it's going to stick, and cleanup is a pain, but again, it worked for me. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good alternative for silicone/latex prosthetic *by E***D on October 15, 2013* I used synwax for a facial prosthetic for a recent costume (I attended NYCC 2013 and cosplayed as Irisa from the show/game Defiance; she is an alien with a very wide and flattened bridge of her nose) since I did not have the time to cast my face and make a custom silicone prosthetic. I ordered it on a Friday afternoon and had it at my house by the following Monday or Tuesday (and had great communication with the seller). There isn't much information on how to apply it; I found maybe a couple of videos on youtube that were helpful. I found it fairly easy to apply once I got it out of the container, which was a bit tricky since it's so sticky and hard; I found using a spoon to scoop/chip it out really worked great. Kneading it for a minute or so warms it up enough that it's nice and pliable. It's sticky enough that it would definitely stay on your skin, but I put some spirit gum on my nose and forehead to give the wax something to hold on to. The wax blends pretty easily and smoothly (vaseline will be your friend here) and worked great to cover my eyebrows. I also didn't need much to accomplish my task; I think the container has enough product for me to redo the piece 3-4 times. Removal wasn't too bad either. The package says mineral oil but I didn't have any, so I just scraped as much off with my fingers as I could, and then just scrubbed really well with makeup remover towels (you can find these at walmart or a pharmacy). It's a little tricky (especially in the eyebrows) and takes some time, but the towels WILL remove it all really well. The biggest con I found was that the stuff does retain your body heat, so it stays very pliable on your skin. Even with makeup over it, it became very shiny on my face, and my hair was constantly sticking to the edges of it. I felt like it was going to start softening too much and slide/melt down my face, though this never came close to actually happening. I wore the piece at comic con for approximately 8 or 9 hours in a very warm environment, so that was a contributing factor as well. I wonder if maybe applying a thin layer of liquid latex over the piece after it's been applied would have helped with the stickiness factor; I might try this and see how it goes. Overall I was pleased with the way the product worked and found it pretty easy to handle. I would have preferred a real prosthetic, but for those with limited resources this isn't a bad alternative at all.
