This is a solid piece of aluminum. When I first picked it up I thought it was made of steel. The coating is a heavy flat black and feels very slick so it acts as a lubricant. Easy to adjust. zero and I do mean ZERO slop. I used it for a box joint jig. for this use the runners stay 100 percent in the cast iron miter slot the entire time. I do think these could be used for a cross cut sled or something similar but you would not be able to use them in a routed slot unless you first put a miter track in it. Although I am happy with it, the only problem is the miter bar slots. The opening is supposed to be 3/4 inch wide but it not even close to that. To make matters worse, the width varies considerably along the length of the slot. This is very frustrating and makes it impossible to build accurate jigs thar depends on the miter slot . What fits in the front binds in the back and vice versa.The plunge design of this miter bar adopts itself to the slot and keeps the bar tight against one side of the slot with ZERO slop. Using this bar made my jigs accurate and dependable.
