Review: Great for rock hounding! - Bought these for a rock hounding trip. They worked great getting quartz crystals out of rock and hardened mud. Easy to use. Handles have a great grip. The weight is perfect. Very well made. Would buy again.
Review: Buy once and buy right! - This rock pick is the definition of buying once and buying right. From the moment you get it in your hand, it’s obvious this is a serious tool built the old-school way—solid, well-balanced, and made to take abuse without flinching. The craftsmanship really shows, and it carries that unmistakable Estwing feel of something designed to last decades, not seasons. The grip is excellent—comfortable, shock-absorbing, and secure even when wet or muddy. After long days of rockhounding and fossil hunting, it’s noticeably easier on the hands and wrists than cheaper alternatives. I initially wondered if I should’ve gone with a longer version for added leverage, but this size turned out to be more than sufficient. It breaks rock efficiently without feeling unwieldy. Durability is where this pick really earns its reputation. It’s been used hard, left dirty, exposed to moisture, and generally treated like a proper outdoor tool—and it keeps going. The steel holds up exceptionally well, and while surface rust can appear over time (as expected with real steel), a quick cleanup and light oil once in a while keeps it in great shape. The rubber handle, in particular, has aged incredibly well compared to leather handles I’ve seen dry out and deteriorate over the years. That said, this is not a toy—and it deserves respect. Eye protection is absolutely non-negotiable. Rock fragments fly, and even steel can chip under force. The safety warning etched into the handle is there for a reason. Yes, it costs more than bargain rock picks. And yes, you could find something cheaper. But you’d also be replacing it sooner—and probably wishing you hadn’t cut corners. This tool feels like it will outlive most of the gear in your kit, and honestly, it becomes a bit sentimental over time. If I lost mine, I’d be upset… and then I’d immediately buy another. Bottom line: this is a premium, no-nonsense rock pick that performs exactly as it should. If you’re serious about rockhounding, fossiling, or geology work, this is money well spent. Don’t cheap out—you’ll feel the difference every time you swing it.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: One reviewer says this actually weighs 22oz not 14oz.. Does anyone know for sure that it's under 1 lb?**
A: I guess it is hit and miss. I believed these answers and got one that is labeled 14oz. but weighs in at 22 ounces. Obviously someone at amazon has mislabeled some of them.

**Q: Can I travel with the hammer inside my luggage or are there any us custom's restrictions?**
A: Opinion: There should be no problems traveling with the hammer. If you're worried just carry the receipt to show where you purchased it. Once the hammer has been "used in anger" against a rock it won't make any difference.

**Q: Do you feel that an enthusiastic strong 12-year old boy could successfully wield the smaller (14 oz.) version of this pick?**
A: Absolutely.

Keep in mind, though, that the pointy end should never be used as a pick--it's more for scraping. Its point is fine enough that using it like a pick can cause metal fragments to chip off that can really mess up an eye.

**Q: What is the weight of the entire hammer? The description says head weight is 14 oz.**
A: It's a 14 ounce hammer. They also offer a 22 ounce hammer. We have both.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Can’t beat a quality USA made product.
*by A***E on January 24, 2026*

Is it ok to say this Item ROCKS…seriously this has the Estwing tradition all over it. How can you go wrong? This was not made Wong. This is a USA product and the craftsmanship shines. It is every bit of a High Quality Product. Packed in a vacuum sealed bubble wrap, which was a bit of a challenge to open, I am so happy with this Rock Pick that I bought 2, one for me and one for my wife, sort of a self defense tactic. No one else makes them like this. Great grip, nice buff, a truly beautifully product. My only wish would be for a wooden handle, but who knows, maybe some day they will make a commemorative miners pick, not by a hick, but with a hickory handle. Sorry for the puns, just can’t wait to get my rocks off with my pick!
